Roger Federer is the second greatest clay-courter, says James Blake

In an interview to Express, the former world No. 4 and current Miami Open Tournament Director James Blake commented on the Roger Federer's comeback to the clay courts for the first time since 2016 Rome. The American is intrigued to see the Swiss on the dirt again. "I saw him talking and he spoke with his team, and they could sense he was excited about it. It’s interesting because of the rivalry with Rafa and how many times they have played each other on clay. For all those years, it seemed Roger was the greatest player on tour but Rafa was the greatest clay-courter. Rafa has cemented himself as the greatest clay-courter of all time. Roger was by far the No 2 player on clay in the world. People think he can’t win on clay, but he was unbelievable. If not for Rafa, Roger would have won the Grand Slam five times over, he very easily could have won four or five French Opens, he was that good on clay. But Rafa was that unique and unbelievable, once in forever talent on clay", said Blake.

“I think it will be fun to see him [Federer] back on clay. He’s excited and to get someone who is 37 and has done that so many times, it’s a positive for the sport. Clay is easier on the body so hopefully, it’s okay on his joints!”

Federer will compete in the Madrid Open next starting on May 5 until May 12.
