Sania Mirza 'Indian Sportswomen Come a Long Way But More Needs to be Done'

Tennis - Former World No. 1 tennis player Sania Mirza, of India, says India has come a long way in recognising the laurels of sportswomen from the country but more effort needs to be made to bring women at par with men in sports

In an article published by Times Now, where Mirza was speaking at a panel discussion at the 35th Annual Session of the FICCI Ladies Organization "Women Shaping the Future", Mirza commented, "Today, we can name at least 10 superstar sportswomen like Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Mary Kom, Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik. We could not do this 10 years ago. So, we have come a long way (in women empowerment in sports) but still a lot needs to be done for women in sports. As much as we talk about women empowerment and equality (with men) I feel we still live in a man's world to a large extent."

Mirza added that she is a firm believer in equal prize money for men and women in sports. "I have been saying for long that women should be paid equal prize money with men. This discrimination is in all sports worldwide. My question is why we even need to explain that women should have equal prize money with men. I want to reach that day when we don't need to explain this. Even if I have made a small impact in the life of just one girl, I will feel proud."

Mirza, who recently became a mother and is working her way to make a comeback to the tennis circuit, added that being a mother has made her a better person and has also made her realise that she has selfless love in her.
