WTA Bogota: Kristie Ahn topples Jelena Ostapenko. Other seeds advance

Ranked outside the top-200, the American Kristie Ahn got the opportunity to play against the top seed Jelena Ostapenko in Bogota as a lucky loser, saving two match points and delivering one of her best performances for a 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 triumph in two hours and 31 minutes. The Latvian won the opening set in style but she failed to keep that pace in the rest of the match, hitting 16 double faults and suffering six breaks from 14 opportunities offered to Ahn. The American dig deep in sets two and three to match the rival's performance and prevail in the pivotal moments, overcoming a 4-2 deficit in set number two to win it 7-5 in the tie break.

Ostapenko could have clinched the win in the final set, breaking for a 5-4 advantage and wasting two match points on serve in game ten, losing the last three games to send Ahn over the finish line. Ana Bogdan defeated a qualifier Chloe Paquet 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, staying on the court for more than two and a half hours but measuring the pace in sets she won to book the place in the second round. The 7th seed Sara Sorribes Tormo ousted Christian McHale 6-4, 6-4, suffering four breaks of serve and canceling the deficit with 55% of the return points won, stealing McHale's serve six times to wrap up the win in straight sets.

The 11th seed Lara Arruabarrena prevailed against Timea Babos 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 with a stellar performance in the third set where she lost just 12 points to race towards the finish line and advance. The 8th seed Magda Linette had to work hard to overcome the deficit against the Spaniard Aliona Bolsova, scoring a 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 win after being on the verge of defeat. Bolsova had everything under control until 6-2, 5-3 when Linette started to climb back, scoring breaks at 4-5 and 5-6 to stay in the match and claiming the tie break 7-5 to prolong the encounter. As was expected, Aliona faded from the court after that, taking just five points in the third set to suffer a bagel and propel the Pole into the last 16.
