ATP Roland Garros: Roger Federer overpowers Oscar Otte in straight sets
Twenty years after making a Roland Garros debut, 2009 champion Roger Federer is through to the third round after a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the German qualifier Oscar Otte in an hour and 36 minutes. This was the 67th win for Federer in Paris, competing at clay Major for the first time since 2015 and looking good to make another good result after performing well in Madrid and Rome, staying away from clay for three years. Otte earned four break points and failed to steal Roger's serve, allowing Federer to break him once in each set and move over the finish line without spending too much time on the court.
It was a high-quality match, with both players hitting more winners than unforced errors, and the German should be pleased with the way he performed against the 20-time Grand Slam champion, heading to Roland Garros with just one Grand Slam match played. Roger needed some time to find the winning formula on the return, breaking Oscar at 15 in game ten following a forehand error from the German and claiming the opener 6-4 in swift 30 minutes. Just like in the opening set, Otte was there to fight in the first seven games of the second set before Federer grabbed a break with a volley winner, taking a 5-3 lead and fending off two break points in the next game for a 6-3 after just 61 minutes.
Otte wasted two break points in the fourth game of the third set and Roger claimed 12 of the last 15 points to bring the match home in style, breaking Oscar in the ninth game when a qualifier sprayed a forehand error. Serving for the victory, the Swiss star held at 15 following a volley winner, earning the Grand Slam win number 344 and securing the place in the last 32.
