Casey Dellacqua nominated for pride in sport award
Retired Australian tennis icon Casey Dellacqua is in the finals of a category at the 2019 Australian Pride in Sport Awards.
Casey Dellacqua is among the finalists for the Out Role Model Award at the 2019 Australian Pride In Sport Awards, a ceremony that will be held next month in Melbourne. The category which Dellacqua has been nominated for recognises the role athletes play in sending a message of inclusion within sport.
Dellacqua has been nominated for the award alongside ice skating’s Tri-Anh Nguyen, surf lifesaving’s Gary Driscoll and Tony Boutoubia of Perth’s Loton Park Tennis Club, which stages the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance’s Perth Lawn Tennis Championships.
Dellacqua announced her retirement last year, playing her last professional match after teaming with Ash Barty to clinch victory in the live doubles rubber of Australia’s Fed Cup tie against Ukraine in February 2018, giving the hosts a 3-2 win on the night.
Dellacqua had an amazing career that saw her reach a personal best ranking of No.3 in the WTA Doubles Charts. She is also a Grand Slam Champion, winning the mixed doubles title at the French Open 2011.
She also was good with singles, cracking the Top-30 rankings during her illustrious career and also reaching the Finals of all four Grand Slams in women’s doubles.
In March this year she gave birth to son Jesse James.
Tennis as a sport has featured prominently in this year’s Pride in Sport award nominations.
The Australian Open’s “Glam Slam” has been recognised with a nomination for the LGBTI Inclusion Initiative award.
