Corentin Moutet getting his just desserts at the French Open
"It's fantastic to be in the third round of Roland Garros, of course. And it's also a good sign," Corentin Moutet smilingly says about his run at the second grand slam of the year. The young Frenchman has the goods to be in a good spot playing many well-known ranking ATP guys and in his country too. The feisty Moutet has created his tennis packet of acquiring a new coach in Emmanuel Planque, training with Roger Federer last year in Dubai and putting in sessions at Rafael Nadal's Academy to be where he is today. He already has a significant bag of tennis tactics and used them to dismantle Argentine Guido Pella ranked no. 19 considered a great clay court player in a four-set battle that had Moutet come out the victor.
At 20, he has created history already as being the youngest Frenchman to get to the third round at Roland Garros since Gael Monfils' appearance in 2006. He isn't a stranger to the French Open either as he made his ATP debut a few years ago, in 2017 getting a wild card to play doubles. Moutet partnered with another Frenchman Constant Lestienne who won over the team of Dustin Brown and Lu Yen-Hsun in the opening round no less. It was a good year for him as he won his first ATP Challenger singles title at the Brest Challenger event defeating Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. He's also won 5 Futures and 3 Challenger events inclusive of his victory over Tsitsipas.
Moutet went on a rampage the following year and made his debut in the singles main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament and at the Australian Open as wild card holder facing Italian veteran Andreas Seppi in the opening round. But despite his determination, he bowed after a 4-set battle. He was luckier with his wild card and entered the Ecuador Open winning his first ATP World Tour singles round defeating Adrian Menendez Maceiras in the opener. Later he received another wild card to the singles main draw of the 2108 French Open and proved the victor over veteran Ivo Karlovic in the beginning round in straight sets but fell in the second to Belgium's David Goffin.
Corentin Moutet feels honoured to not only be in the French Open's third round but to be the youngest Frenchman still playing in Roland Garros. He's enjoying his performances and knows that he has a job to do on the court saying plain and simple that no matter the results "It's fantastic for the country, especially because it's in France." He's glad for his country to get the recognition and feels satisfied that he can be one of the players to win at the French Open saying "So for the audience supporting us and cheering us. It's good to offer them victories...but then I'm just playing my tournament."
