Jo Wilfried Tsonga withdraws from Madrid Masters
French tennis star Jo Wilfried Tsonga has withdrawn from the Madrid Masters.
The 34-year-old won't be making his 11th appearance on the clay of Madrid next week.
Former world No. 5 Tsonga made 10 consecutive appearance at the Madrid event between 2008 and 2017.
The Frenchman, who was forced to skip Madrid last year after undergoing a knee surgery, was expected to return to the tournament this year.
Tsonga, now ranked at No. 101 in the world, entered the Madrid event by using protected ranking.
The 34-year-old was drawn to meet fellow compatriot Jeremy Chardy in the Madrid first round.
The Frenchman's best result in Madrid came in 2013 when he made the quarter-final before losing to Swiss Stan Wawrinka.
Tsonga last played at this week's Bordeaux Challenger, where he made the quarter-final before suffering a surprise loss to Slovakia's Filip Horansky.
Meanwhile Chardy, who was due to face Tsonga in the first round, will be opening his Madrid campaign against a lucky loser.
