Paire on facing fellow French Herbert: 'It will be an interesting match'
Playing at home means you have the crowd most probably on your side, which is a powerful tool to boost self-confidence, but receiving encouragement from fellow players that represent your same flag can prove to be a great push too. Some of France’s eight players still alive in the men’s singles draw shared positive thoughts aimed at each other as the second round of the French Open is about to begin.
"Pierre-Hugues is someone I like a lot,” said Benoit Paire, who is set to battle Herbert for a pass to the round of 32. “I like his style of play, he's a great guy with whom I did a few days of vacation. He had a great background so I was happy that he got out of it, we sent each other a small text message saying that if we could meet in the second round it would be perfect. I want to follow up on the confidence accumulated in Lyon. It will be an interesting match. "
On his side, Herbert talked about his “big brother” and fellow 2018 Roland Garros doubles champion, Nicolas Mahut, "I saw it, I watched it, I followed it [Nicolas Mahut’s match]. I even vibrated for him in this 5th set. He made an extraordinary match and I thought about it when I was two sets down and I said to myself: ‘don’t drop anything, Nico did it too, keep fighting’. Indeed, it rather helped me in this match.”
