Roger Federer played on clay his whole life, he is okay - Former coach

Former Roger Federer's coach Paul Annacone was pleased with the Swiss's straight-set win over Richard Gasquet in Madrid. Speaking on Tennis Channel Annacone said: "He played on clay his whole life, the style of his game is not going to change so much but the fact that he played on clay his whole life, he knows how to move on it and he got three weeks of training in altitude and practised a little bit in Zurich before he came over here but he is ready to play and he has done this his whole life, not so much in the last few years but he is okay."

The former player Tracy Austin added: "Sometimes we forget how good Roger is on the surface, the 2009 French Open title was so important to him and yes, it has been a long time but he grew up on the surface as he said and the conditions are so quick, perfect for his game and I think the opponent was perfect as well. He had such a huge head to head against Gasquet and coming back so it's nice to re-introduce yourself to the surface with this kind of opponent and through a quick win."

Federer said: "I'm very happy to be back on clay. Super happy to be back here in Madrid. The crowds and the ovation I got before and after the game were great. It really makes you feel like that was the right choice to come to Madrid."
