Serena Williams is running behind her 24th Grand Slam title, says coach
In an interview to Nice Matin the Serena Williams's coach Patrick Mouratoglou commented on the American player's attempt to catch Margaret Court's 24 Major titles record. "There was a year and a half break due to the motherhood, but Serena had a good year in 2018 coming back from a long absence. She reached two Grand Slam finals but for her it's not enough. We are running behind this 24th Major! She is used to face challenges, this is what motivates us every day otherwise she would have probably retired", said Mouratoglou.
On the current situation of the French tennis, Mouratoglou added: "We are going through not a too good time. Some important reforms were made and the Head National Director was really committed. Now there are three young guys who really play well like Ugo Humbert who showed his potential in Marseille (semifinals), Lucas Pouille and Corentin Moutet who should soon crack the top 100 rankings. I think we will benefit from it in the next years, we should be a bit patient."
In an interview to Metro, Mouratoglou criticized tennis: "Obviously the way tennis is run all around the world is not the right way because we’re not attractive to young people. We’re attractive to old people and even then I’m not sure we’re attractive, I think it’s the fans of tennis who came in the 70s and 80s and stayed, who are still fans. ‘So 10 years ago the average age was 52. Now it’s 62. So in 10 years it will be 72 if we don’t move now. It’s time to move. It’s time to realise that tradition is fantastic but if because of tradition and only tradition you lose everyone it’s less fantastic so you have to keep some tradition to this sport of course but you also have to live in your century."
