Taking late wildcard into Geneva was right move by Alexander Zverev
Taking a late wildcard into Geneva was the right move made by Germany's Alexander Zverev, who found a much-needed form and confidence for the French Open.
In six clay tournaments played before Geneva, the world No. 5 picked up several early round exits as he won back-to-back matches at only one of those six events.
Zverev's Geneva campaign was far from smooth and convincing but he managed to win a couple of tough matches and eventually win his first Geneva title and overall his 11th ATP title.
The 22-year-old handed a straight-set defeat to Ernests Gulbis in his Geneva opener before he clinched three-set wins over Hugo Dellien, Federico Delbonis and Nicolas Jarry respectively.
The win over rising star Jarry could be exactly what Zverev needed as the German saved two match points en route to a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (8) final win.
Former world No. 3 will now certainly feel a bit better about his game as he will be hoping to make a deep run on the clay of Roland Garros.
The German, who reached his first French Open quarter-final last year, is due to open his campaign at the tournament against world No. 55 John Millman.
