WTA Roland Garros: Serena Williams eases past Kurumi Nara to reach R3

Competing in only the fifth tournament of the season, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and three-time Roland Garros winner Serena Williams is through to the last 32 following a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kurumi Nara in 67 minutes! Serena grabbed the 65th win at Roland Garros and will compete in the third round for the 14th time thanks to a rock-solid display against the Japanese ranked 238th. Firing ten aces and losing only nine points in her service games, it was all about Serena from start to finish, facing no break points and seizing three chances from 12 she earned to move over the top in no time at all.

The American landed 36 winners and 21 unforced errors, keeping the points on her racquet and overpowering the rival who sprayed just four mistakes but added only 11 winners to her tally, not enough to move Serena from the comfort zone or impose her shots. The Japanese repelled six break points in the sixth game of the match to stay on the positive side of the scoreboard before Williams clinched the break at 15 at 4-3 with a powerful forehand down the line winner, opening the gap and sealing the opener with a hold at 15 for a 6-3 after 37 minutes.

A former champion was the only player on the court in set number two, serving well and securing a break in game three to move closer to the finish line, forcing an error from Nara who never stood a chance against deep and precise groundstrokes from the other side of the net. Lob winner and another one from the return gave Serena a 4-1 advantage and she created a match point on the return in game seven, denied by Kurumi before hitting an ace in the next game that propelled her into the last 32.
