One of the best quad wheelchair players of all time – Dylan Alcott recently won the Wimbledon title and his speech was one that everyone had to hear. The 28-year-old Aussie was too good for his doubles partner Andy Lapthorne, beating him, 6-0, 6-2 for his 12th Grand Slam title.
He now holds all four Grand Slam singles titles, having won the US Open last year and winning the Australian and French Open titles already in 2019.
"We weren't able to play Wimbledon the last few years...I'm going to get emotional...and to come out here and to get to play on the grass, for a young kid from Australian who was born in a wheelchair, it was a bloody dream come true - it really was," he said.
"To the All England club, thanks so much for having us - I hope we put on an entertaining show. I know we did, because look how many bloody people are here in this stadium. You can't tell me people don't want to watch wheelchair tennis. It's such an entertaining sport.”
"To everyone that played it on the BBC, and to everyone back home who played it - Fox Sports and it was on the Seven App. I can't thank you enough for broadcasting this, because not only does it change our lives, but it changes the lives of a lot of little kids out there with disabilities who see people like them on TV for the very first time.”
"To everyone who did that, thank you so much."
He then went on to speak about his personal group, saying, "Thanks to every single one of you who came out here today. I remember about five years ago when I used to play with Andy around the world, there was about three people there. And they were our parents.”
"Now, people are buying tickets because they want to watch, and it's changing the lives of so many people. To my 55 friends who came - there you are. Let's get absolutely sauced tonight. And to the All England club, thank you for having me here. I don't know who I have to talk to to get a membership, but let me know.”
He ended by saying, “And now that I'm a champion, I can't wait to get into that lockerroom downstairs...is that how it works? Me and Roger!"
