Federer, Djokovic and Nadal are hard workers, powerful - Schett

In an interview with Kurier, the former world no. 7 Barbara Schett commented on the gap between younger players and older players on the women's side. "I find this difference as totally exciting and good for the sport. You also have to see how powerful Big Three - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal - are, how they work. Instead, on the women's side, there is more variety and it's difficult to predict who will win," said the German TV presenter.

On Cori Gauff's breakthrough in Wimbledon, Schett added: "It's not the first time it happens. Martina Hingis won her first Grand Slam title at 16 years, Michael Chang, Boris Becker and Mats Wilander were 17. I think Gauff is refreshing for the game, she is American and she is a great person too."

Now almost all the women play in the same way. Why? "The physical part has a much big part, but now players split with coaches, some of them are not even good. Back in the day, we played more matches and tournaments and you used to try things like serve and volley."

Asked to make predictions ahead of the Hamburg event, she said: "Nicolas Jarry has just won a tournament (in Bastad) and beat Alexander Zverev this year. I would like Thiem and Zverev to face each other in the final on Sunday."

She praised Hamburg: "I always liked playing here. Because it was often fresh and rainy, slow conditions are good for me. I played semifinals twice here, I won two times in doubles. I love Hamburg as a city too."
