Facing Federer,Nadal,Djokovic at US Open would have been tough for Murray'
The former world No. 2 Alex Corretja believes Andy Murray took the right decision in not playing US Open singles next week.
Murray is competing in Winston Salem this week and he may take a wild card to play a Challenger event in September, before heading to Asia to compete in Zhuhai and Beijing.
Speaking to Eurosport, Corretja, who will be one of the main pundits for the European channel, said: "It is not going to make any difference for him and he can hurt himself or damage himself so I think it’s a good idea not to go to the US Open. Playing at the US Open is very demanding, all of a sudden to go there and play best-of-five, what’s the point? If you win one match and then you go ... okay, let’s say he wins two matches best-of-five and then he has to play the third round, nothing is going to change for him. Once he gets the rhythm, maybe in Asia playing tournaments there or maybe at the end of the year, then he might be ready for next season. But going to the US Open, best of five and he needs to play these kind of guys where it’s very difficult", Corretja said referring to the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic who will be the top favorites in the last Calendar Grand Slam of the season.
Speaking about his recovery process, Murray said: "When I was going out and playing golf or walking the dogs [pain-free], you’re just encouraged to get out and do more stuff. Before that, I didn’t want to. I wanted to put my feet up because doing those things was detrimental and painful. I’m excited to go out and do other stuff, which you need. You don’t want to have your mind just on your tennis and your hip, which it was for a couple of years.”
