Greg Rusedski reacts to Andy Murray willing to play Challenger event
Former world No. 4 Greg Rusedski has praised Andy Murray for willing to play a Challenger event during the US Open as he believes the former world No. 1 can only gain from it as he hopes to make a successful comeback to tennis.
Murray, 32, accepted a wildcard into next week's Winston-Salem Open and withdrew from the US Open doubles as, two months after returning from a hip resurfacing surgery, he wants to focus on singles as he believes he is ready for the next step.
The three-time Grand Slam champion returned to singles action this week at the Cincinnati Masters, where he was beaten in the first round by French Richard Gasquet.
"Great to hear that Andy Murray will be moving down a level to the challenger level to play matches during the US Open," Rusedski said on Twitter.
After ending his 2017 season prematurely to undergo a wrist surgery, 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori chose to make his return at the end of 2018 January by playing back-to-back Challenger events.
"Kei Nishikori did this, this year as well to gain confidence and match play," Rusedski added.
