‘Jerk’ Nick Kyrgios is worse than McEnroe - ATP Vice-President
Richard Ings, former executive vice-president of the ATP, attacked Kyrgios’ Cincinnati meltdown and compared it to McEnroe’s on-court behaviour while praising umpire Fergus Murphy for how he handled the Aussie’s rant.
Nick Kyrgios offended the tennis world after he left the court to smash two rackets, swore the umpire and time violated the match against Karen Khachanov that ended 7/6,6/7, 2/6 for the Russian.
Richard Ings criticized Nick’s way of acting on the field especially his relationship with the umpires. “He treats them like dirt and that is really unacceptable”, said Ings.
“Nick Kyrgios behaviour in this match was, yet again, that of a jerk. Breaking rackets off the court will attract identical fines to on court. Throwing a cup at the chair and bare-faced lying about it. Spitting at and verbally abusing the umpire. A poor loser”, Ings posted on Twitter.
Besides attacking the Aussie’s faulty demeanour, Ings praised the Fergus Murphy, the umpire who endured Nick’s rant.
"The umpire in this match, Fergus Murphy, has decades of experience at this elite level. In fact, when I was executive vice president of the ATP, I initially hired him as a full-time professional umpire. He's spectacularly capable in the job at hand. He handled that match incredibly well. I'm sure that the sport will back him fully and level whatever sanctions are needed against Nick Kyrgios”, said Ings.
Richard was right, ATP has issued penalties on Nick’s name without any restraints. Kyrgios has to pay $113,000 for many reasons mentioned in an ATP statement: ball abuse, multiple unsportsmanlike conducts, leaving the court, audible obscenity and verbal abuse.
If we think of another tennis player that gets close to Nick’s volcanic personality, John McEnroe will probably be the first that comes up. However, Ings thinks that Kyrgios is much worse than the American.
"I never found him (McEnroe) to be threatening. I never found him to be belittling. I just found him to get quite angry from time to time. Nick Kyrgios by comparison really belittles the officials. This is extremely rare in professional tennis, even taking John McEnroe's history into account", said ATP’s former EVP.
Ings wrapped up the recent fines that ATP issued to Kyrgios and his compatriot Bernard Tomic in a recent tweet. “At the moment, two Australian male tennis players are embarrassing. The huge fines levied in recent weeks against Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic were totally deserved. The recent behaviour of both was beyond despicable. Grow up both of you.”
