Peter Gojowzcyk: I am really a lucky loser in Washington
World No. 122 Peter Gojowzcyk says he is "really a lucky loser" after clinching his fourth surprise win of the week to make the Citi Open semifinal in Washington.
The German failed to make the Washington through the qualifying event as he got beaten in the final round by Donald Young but sneaked into the main draw as a lucky loser.
On Friday, Gojowzcyk added world No. 34 Kyle Edmund to his victims list in Washington as earned a three-set win over the 2018 Australian Open semifinalist 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Previously, the 30-year-old German surprised last week's Hamburg runner-up Andrey Rublev, last week's Atlanta champion Alex de Minaur and 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic respectively.
“I’m just happy to be the semifinals right now,” Gojowzcyk told the Tennis Channel post-match, as revealed on the Citi Open website. “I beat such good players. I have nothing to lose now. I’m really a ‘lucky loser.’”
Gojowzcyk, a former world No. 39, is having quite a debut in Washington as he will fight against No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final.
