Roger Federer is a freak of nature, says Patrick McEnroe
In an interview, the former world No. 1 Patrick McEnroe commented on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's longevity. The American, who regularly works as a commentator in Grand Slams and some Masters 1000s, said: "We were lucky enough to have these guys playing at such a high level, chasing for so long. Every time these guys play each other is big news. Unfortunately, the hard court for Rafa picks it, he played a lot of tennis on clay but on hard, with his body, he gets affected. We should appreciate that Roger is still there, he is a freak of nature, in his late 30s. Players are all trying to stay healthy, the sport has become more physical. They play exhibitions to make more money but they play fewer tournaments. We need those players to keep the business."
On how he deals with injuries, Nadal said: "You push your body to the possible highest stage. Playing at a high level is very demanding. It's not fun for me to have pain. After dealing with all so many injuries, when I have the opportunity to compete, I enjoy much more. I do not pretend to play without pain, I'd like to do it without limitations. I just try to maximize the period of time where I have the chance to be here. I would like not to think about each ball, or if you have to run for a certain ball. If you move the way you would like to, life is a bit easier. I try to give my best in every single shot, to have the best tactic."
