Revealed: The amount of money Alexander Zverev got to play in Hamburg
Alexander Zverev was the main star in Hamburg last week. The German event featured packed crowds and many people attended the tournament in order to see their local hero live. According to reports, Zverev got 300,000 euros to play in Hamburg. In 2015 Rafael Nadal had gotten 500,000 euros. They usually ask for more money but in both cases they got a last minute wild card so they could not play.
In an interview to Tennis Tour Talk, the new Tournament Director Sandra Reichel commented on the challenges of hosting an ATP 500 tournament: "Of course, we knew the venue, but we had to find out what is happening during the actual week of the tournament. We also needed to understand the history of the Rothenbaum tournament and the people, who are involved. It was important to bring the different stakeholders together. Concerning the infrastructure, further improvements will be made in the future to develop the tournament further."
Reichel continued: "I am very happy with this year’s line-up. In my opinion, Dominic Thiem is the best clay-court player besides Rafael Nadal and the Hamburg crowd loves him. Having Sascha here was the biggest present. With Fabio Fognini there are three Top-10-players competing here this week, all of them with different characters. That makes it special and obviously helped us a lot."
Zverev lost to eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili in the semi-final. Basilashvili successfully defended his title in Hamburg becoming the first player since Roger Federer to win two consecutive titles in the event.
