Roger Federer: 'Next Gen will be challenging us for sure, but...'
In Cincinnati Roger Federer spoke about his, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's dominance and how the younger players are trying to get to the top. "They will be challenging us for sure", Federer admitted. "The question is who will be able to go through all the three of us. You need to probably beat two of three especially if everybody is injury-free. We are all in a great shape and playing very well. But there is no guarantee there, we are all over 30-year-olds. They will definitely be knocking on the door."
Federer loves competing in Cincinnati: “It’s peaceful, quiet and easy-going. We have enough tournaments in big cities, so it’s a nice way for me to start the summer. You also have these great fans who come here for the game and nothing else. It reminds me of Indian Wells in that sense, so that’s one thing which is cool about this event.”
Speaking about the next season, Federer added: "I don't know if I will be playing the Olympics, I do not know how long I am gonna play. Very happy with my level of play, I have not spoken to my friends or family or anything about. I just do not know."
Asked what qualities a player needs to have in order to be picked as his hitting partner, Federer concluded: "Nice guy. I like when they are good guys. You can have a chat with them. I guess you could say, Well, we are professionals, who cares if it's nice guys or not. But for me that's really important, I get along well with them, so on the change events you can have a nice chat and talk about stuff as well away from forehands, backhands. And then maybe helps at times to play with a rythm player, a guy who doesn't take away rhythm from you but also one that maybe possesses a game that can make it complicated and difficult for you. So it really depends on where you are at in your preparation."
