Shapovalov: 'I watch highlights of 2017 win over Nadal to find inspiration'
Denis Shapovalov was the special guest during the Rogers Cup men's draw in Montreal on Friday. The Canadian player recalled his third round win over Rafael Nadal two years ago. "I occasionally go back to watch highlights of that match when I need a little inspiration, motivation, self-belief... and look the way I was -- so fearless. I like to take myself back there", said Shapovalov.
Comparing himself now to 24 months ago, he added: "I am a really good player now. I am excited and happy to be back. After Wimbledon I spent time with my family and friends, just taking a step back from tennis. I have been struggling with my game. After four weeks off, I feel much better and inspired to go back to the court."
On his opening round against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Shapovalov said: "Definitely a tough match. Anyway, the draw is super tough, it's not gonna be a walk in the park. I am just excited to play my game and put on the battle in front of my favourite crowd."
Asked if he's again staying at Auger-Aliassime's house as he did two years ago, Shapovalov laughed: "No, he kicked me out", he concluded.
Shapovalov had many downs this year, having lost many opening rounds especially on clay and grass. We will see how he will do in the North American hard-court swing.
