Simona Halep: I ate ribs the night before the match but...
On Tuesday night, Simona Halep shared a photo on Twitter of her having dinner with her team in Cincinnati hours before she was to open her campaign in the event. Halep eventually won her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets on Wednesday. The Romanian player said: "I had ribs but just half. Because I was worried about today and during the night I felt hungry."
Analyzing her victory over Alexandrova, Halep added: "I was a little bit nervous before the match because the injury was pretty tough last week but today I did not have pain so I am really happy about it. I was scared a little bit to run to the balls but then after I started to feel the rhythm it was much easier. I was pretty tense. In the third set, I said that I was up one break, so I lost the serve because I was too slow on the legs and I did not have power but I said that I have to push until the end."
Asked if starting with a bye in the first round helps her, Halep said: "Definitely is not always good, because you start the tournament late and your opponent has a match already. You don't have the same level, the same rhythm as the opponent. But sometimes when you're tired, it's good. When you have a lot of matches before, it's good to have one extra day off. So it's in the middle. It's okay. I take it."
Halep will next face the American Madison Keys who defeated Daria Kasatkina in straights.
