Stefanos Tsitsipas: 'I played heroic tennis'
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Jordan Thompson in straight sets, 6-3 7-6, to reach the Citi Open quarter-finals and book a clash against the Frenchman Benoit Paire on Friday. Tsitsipas was satisfied with his performance. “It’s very pleasing knowing that I can be mature and handle those situations very bravely, so I’m really happy with that. I showed character out there. I played heroic tennis, I would say, in those crucial moments. That was very nice to see," said the Athens native.
It's not the first time this week that Tsitsipas has gone through close sets as he had also beaten the American Tommy Paul 6-3 7-5 on Wednesday. “When I stick to my game and find the way I have to execute my game plan, not pay attention too much to what my opponent is doing on the other side of the court, I usually play my best, as you saw last year in Toronto. That’s exactly what I was doing and it was working pretty well, so I’m trying to focus on that," he concluded.
Tsitsipas is very open in talking to media, as is Kristina Mladenovic who, speaking of media obligations in Washington, said: “I had many people saying, telling me you should maybe protect yourself more and give them less like content and like just sort of being boring and answer classic like most of people do so they don’t criticize you. I’m like, that’s not my personality. I’m saying nothing bad, but I like to be productive and just say what I think. If you have boring questions, I don’t want to be boring with answers. I try to take it like happy mood and positive.”
