Andy Murray reacts to first post-hip surgery singles win at ATP level
Former world No. 1 Andy Murray, 32, didn't hide his happiness after clinching first win at the ATP level since January as he described his Zhuhai Championships first round win over Tennys Sandgren as "one of the toughest wins that I have had."
Murray, who is playing his third ATP level tournament in singles since making a comeback from a hip resurfacing surgery, overcame world No. 69 Sandgren in three sets 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-1 to set up a round-of-16 meeting against rising Australian star Alex de Minaur.
The three-time Grand Slam champion failed to convert his first match point in the second set tie-break but he remained calm and kept his focus as he cruised past the third set to earn the win in two hours and 41 minutes of play.
"In some ways it was one of the toughest wins that I've had," Murray said post-match, per the AFP.
"It's good to see I'm still progressing and making improvements.
"Tonight was a really good match to get through but I'll see how I feel tomorrow.
"It was important for me to get my first win on Tour since the operation.
"Now it's pretty cool to play and not have pain there."
