Nina Stojanovic wins ITF singles title at Poitiers
The year is ending on a happy note for Serbia's Nina Stojanovic and she's glad to not only feel relieved but making her doubles partner happy too. She had just won an ITF singles title at Poitiers, France defeating Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets. This singles title was a welcomed addition to her seven other ITF single titles on the Women's Circuit in her career.
The tour held surprises along with hard work for Stojanovic as she scored her first singles WTA semifinal last month in Nanchang, Jiangxi, opposite Sweden's Rebecca Peterson. The Serb had also had a win over Samantha Stosur someone she never thought she'd ever defeat. She felt that her skills were coming together as she started playing and lasting deeper in the draw. At the beginning of September was her other ITF singles title in China as she defeated Aleksandrina Naydenova in straight sets of 6-1, 6-1. Winning for yourself is one thing, but teaming up with Sharon Fichman was ideal as they won the doubles title at the Baltic Open in July. It was a long hard fought match but helping Fichman win finally after a five-year struggle in doubles was a tremendous accomplishment. The Canadian had severe injuries coming about from having a bad ankle sprain. Fichman also had to have major knee surgery in 2014 so for her to comeback from it all and pair with Stojanovic to win back in July the doubles title was remarkable.
"Unfortunately I still didn't heal my injury from the last tournament I played, and I am so sad that I will not be able to compete on one of my favorite tournaments, Australian Open..." Nina Stojanovic has said a few years ago. But today both she and Fichman are enjoying tennis again, getting titles, staying healthy and raising their game levels to have a successful time on court.
