Denis Shapovalov reflects on Rafael Nadal loss at DC Finals
Rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov wasn't happy with the fact that he lost to Spain's Rafael Nadal in the final of the inaugural Davis Cup Finals but underlined that the match itself was a special moment for him.
Nadal, ranked at No. 1 in the world, didn't miss out on the chance to bring Spain the 2019 Davis Cup title and to delight the local crowd in Madrid as he beat the 20-year-old Canadian 6-3 7-6 (7) in the second rubber of the tie.
One break of serve in the first set was enough for Nadal as the Spaniard didn't face a single break point in the opener.
Nadal blew two consecutive match points in the second set tie-break but kept his focus as he saved Shapovalov's first set point and realized his third match point to get the job done in two sets.
"I think it's pretty special to be playing in an occasion like this against world No. 1, he's playing at home. And it was just a lot of fun to be on the court there. Of course, it sucks to lose, but it's just a big learning experience for me," Shapovalov said after the match, per George Bellshaw of Metro UK.
In the opening rubber of the tie, this year's Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut saw off Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in straight sets.
