Gael Monfils hopes to challenge Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic in Abu Dhabi

The 12th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi will take place between December 19-21, standing as one of the most significant pre-season events. Since the first Mubadala WTC tournament in January 2009, some of the best players from the last decade had all played at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, with eight titles shared between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and two more for Andy Murray. The organizers of the upcoming event have been working hard on signing the strongest possible line-up once again, with the world's leading players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic heading to Abu Dhabi in the quest for the fifth title in the desert.

The US Open finalist and the two-time Masters 1000 champion Daniil Medvedev will try to spoil their party, together with the ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas who wants to become world no. 1 in the season ahead of us. The fifth signed player is another top-10 star Gael Monfils, making his first trip to Abu Dhabi since 2011 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the first round. Monfils will finish the year in the top-10 for the first time since 2016 after winning the title in Rotterdam and scoring 37 wins overall, advancing into the semi-final in Montreal and the quarter-final at the US Open to find himself in the elite again, hoping to stay there throughout 2020 as well.

"Having played in Abu Dhabi before, I know the special atmosphere of this Championship and I am excited to be coming back. I'm looking forward to going up against a strong field and I believe that it will be the perfect way to begin an important season," Monfils said.

"Bringing the world's best tennis players to Abu Dhabi is something that we take seriously at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship," John Lickrish, chief executive of Flash Entertainment, said. "Gael Monfils' confirmation is proof of our desire to bring the global tennis elite to the UAE's capital and treat spectators to the unique opportunity of watching five of the ten best males players in the World in a unique festival atmosphere that is fast-becoming a signature of this special Championship."
