Rafael Nadal to be French Open favorite until he can't walk - Former Federer's coach

Roger Federer's former coach Paul Annacone believes Rafael Nadal has high chances to equal Swiss player's Majors. The American, speaking to The New York Times, said: “I don’t see how he can’t get to 20. I think Rafa is still the favorite at the French until he retires or until he can’t walk. But I’ll be shocked if there’s not one new Slam winner next year.”

Speaking furthermore of Nadal, Annacone added: “The guy just continues to amaze me. The thing about Rafa is his engine revs so high that you always thought he would burn out faster, but I think the biggest factor is the simplicity of why he plays and what drives him. He’s never really gotten sidetracked from that theme, even with his injuries. And as much as he loves to compete, the simplicity of accepting what he can’t control really has helped him continue to play.”

Annacone believes there will be many events next year including Tokyo Olympics and so playing just a certain amount of tournaments will be the key: “The schedule is a joke next year. You have to be really smart, and you have to make hard decisions.”

Nadal had a dramatic finish to the 2019 season as he finished the year as the world no. 1 for the fifth time in his career. He also became the oldest player to finish the year as the top-ranked player. Then, he followed this up by helping Spain win its sixth Davis Cup title in the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, against Canada.
