Rafael Nadal: Year-end No. 1 finish wasn't one of my goals for this season
Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, 33, has revealed that finishing the year ranked at No. 1 in the world wasn't one of his goals coming into this season but he is happy to be where he is now.
Novak Djokovic claimed the Paris Masters title last week after beating rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov in the final but still it wasn't enough for him to hold the No. 1 ranking as Rafael Nadal returned to the top spot for the first time since last year's November.
The 33-year-old Spaniard is now in the pole position to end the season ranked at the No. 1 spot and prevent the Serb from tying Pete Sampras record of six year-end No. 1 finishes.
Nadal, who was forced to pull out from his Paris semifinal due to an abdominal injury, hopes it won't be giving him problems in London as he aims to win his maiden Nitto ATP Finals title.
“For me personally it wasn’t one of my goals. I’m super happy to be where I am today but for me the goal is to play the full tournament with full health. I had a scary moment with my abdominal... but I will be very happy this year if I can make it," Nadal said, per George Bellshaw of Metro UK.
