Vishnu Vardhan: In India here is money for performance, not for potential
Indian tennis star Vishnu Vardhan is a silent wanderer in the Indian tennis circuit even though he is a former Davis Cupper and an Olympian. Vardhan recently said that the Indian state Governments must support the young guns so that talent can be promoted.
“In India, there is money for performance, not for potential. Once you win an Olympic medal, you get Rs 30/50 crore. All the State and National Associations will start to brand you as their player. That is the end goal. But what is the use in it? How much support Sindhu got when she was 13 years old,” he said.
He further added, “I know Sindhu’s father PV Ramanna sir, a railway employee who had to struggle a lot to let her participate in tournaments. There was no support for them at all. He went through a loss of pay. My point is that the players are not getting enough support when they need it.”
Talking about the tennis scenario in the State, Vishnu didn’t hide his disappointment. “I am the top-ranked men’s singles player from the State since 2004. Now I am 32. I don’t even know the top ten players in my own State. We need a three-fold system of development in tennis. Good training, support for travelling and education. Moreover, we should support players at all levels.”
“Awareness has to be there. There should be good exposure for the players. Then the corporate support will come. Once the national leagues are promoted, things will change.”
