Benoit Paire: 'I can't wait for the ATP Cup, it should be very fun'
The inaugural ATP Cup will take place between January 3-12 in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney, with 24 teams battling for the title and massive prize money and ATP points. France will compete in Group A in Brisbane together with Serbia, South Africa and Chile, hoping to reach the quarter-final and stay on the title course after sending almost the strongest squad to Australia. Their top singles player Gael Monfils is the leader of the pack, followed by Benoit Paire, Lucas Pouille and the doubles specialists Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
In his best season since 2015, Benoit Paire claimed titles in Marrakech and Lyon, embracing nearly full calendar and entering almost 30 ATP tournaments to keep himself busy between January and November. The Frenchman finished the season with a mediocre 34-29 score but those two titles together with some other deep runs were enough to wrap up the action in the top-25, hoping for more of the same in 2020. Paire is excited about the first edition of the ATP Cup, ready to give his best in the national jersey once again and hoping for a great fun with his teammates.
"Sebastien Grosjean and Arnaud Clement were the players I loved to watch when I was little, following their matches and supporting them. I grew up close to Marseille and had the opportunity to watch them live at the Open 13, also traveling to Roland Garros with my parents and getting some autographs. I like team competitions and the pressure that playing for your country brings, can't wait for the ATP Cup to start. Gael Monfils is the funniest French player, I like watching him play when his game is on. I couldn't play junior team events with the rest of the French ATP Cup squad because Gael is older than me while Lucas is younger but we are still great friends, it should be interesting to share the court with them."
