Jan-Lennard Struff shares why he is playing exhibition in Saudi Arabia
Jan-Lennard Struff is already in Saudi Arabia. The German player came there on Wednesday, as he is one of the eight players committed to the inaugural Diriyah Tennis Cup that takes place from 12 to 14 December also featuring Stan Wawrinka, Daniil Medvedev , Fabio Fognini , David Goffin , Lucas Pouille , Gael Monfils and John Isner. "It's a pretty strong field", said Struff through WhatsApp in an interview to Tennis Magazin. After the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, he enjoyed a vacation in South Africa with his girlfriend and their child. From there he went to Saudi Arabia but without the family. His coach Carsten Arriens and physioterapist Uwe Liedtke are with him. "Here I can prepare to 2020 in a proper way and that's the most important thing for me", explained Struff. "This is not a holiday. I want to use my time in a proper way."
On Sunday Medvedev will get to Saudi Arabia. From Tuesday, all the other players will be competing. "Here I will have high level hitting partners like nowhere. The better opponents are, the better for me. Struff admitted he is playing this event also because of money. A three million dollars prize money will be at stake. But he is also supporting the country that was characterized by several controversies over the last years. He has high goals: "Next year I want to improve my results compared to the previous year. And this kind of preparation will definitely help me."
