Amanda Animisova and Carlos Rodriguez End Coaching Arrangement
The coaching partnership between American teen Amanda Anisimova and Carlos Rodriguez has come to an end, just a few weeks after the pair started working together.
Rodriguez was brought on to coach Anisimova after her father, who had coached her for most of her life, passed away just before the US Open in August last year. In October 2019, Rodriguez took some time off from his tennis academy in Beijing, China and decided to travel full-time with Anisimova.
While they worked together in the off-season, they played just two tournaments together as a team -- the Auckland Open and Australian Open 2020. While Anisimova reached the semifinals in Auckland, she lost in the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Rodriguez has worked with Belgian Justine Henin and China's Li Na in the past. It is reported that he will now return working at his academy.
There was no disclosure as to who would be the new coach of Anisimova. The American teen, who already has a multi-million dollar deal with Nike, reached the semi-finals of the French Open last year after a win over defending champion Simona Halep there - becoming the youngest semifinalist at the tournament in over a decade.
As a junior, Anisimova was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world, winning the 2017 Junior US Open, as well as two other Grade A titles. She also became the first American finalist at the French Open girls' singles tournament in 14 years.
