ATP Rankings: Roger Federer survives in third. Djokovic, Nadal embrace no. 1 battle
The updated ATP ranking list saw no changes in the top-15 after two ATP 250 and one ATP 500 event behind us, with all that to change in seven days after Dubai and Acapulco. Novak Djokovic is spending the 279th week on the ATP throne, moving seven away from Pete Sampras in second place and staying on the course of reaching Roger Federer who is alone at the top with 310. Novak has made a winning start in Dubai, beating Malek Jaziri in the first round and hoping for more of the same in the rest of the event, keeping the no. 1 spot if he reaches the semis. World no. 2 Rafael Nadal will try to pass the Serb and regain the throne after losing it in Melbourne, having to win the title in Acapulco to stand any chance of moving in front of Djokovic. Roger Federer is still in the top-3 but that will all change next Monday, with the Swiss undergoing knee surgery and skipping every tournament until June.
Roger will not defend the title in Dubai this week and Dominic Thiem will pass him when the new list comes out, failing to achieve that last week as he lost in the quarter-final in Rio de Janeiro to a player ranked outside the top-100. Daniil Medvedev suffered a terrible loss in Marseille to Gilles Simon, still standing more than 1000 points ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas who defended the title at that event in style, keeping a massive lead ahead of Alexander Zverev who is the 2nd seed in Acapulco behind Rafa. Struggling with an injury, Matteo Berrettini has been sidelined since the Australian Open, staying in the top-8 and sharing the position with Gael Monfils who is off to a winning start in Dubai, ready to pass Matteo next Monday.
Rio de Janeiro champion Cristian Garin has caused the only change in the top-20, gaining seven places to crack the mentioned group for the first time, earning 750 points in the past three weeks on his beloved clay. Delray beach champion Reilly Opelka is in the top-40 again, with the beaten finalist Yoshihito Nishioka entering the top-50, passing 15 rivals just like Opelka did. Ro de Janeiro finalist Gianluca Mager is in the top-100 for the first time, gaining no less than 51 positions for a career-high ranking at the age of 25.
