Darren Cahill Not Happy with Prize Money Distribution at the WTA Dubai Event
The issue of prize money on the tennis tour has come up several times in recent years, with several players thinking that more prize money should go to players in the early rounds of tournaments.
Australian Darren Cahill, the coach of former World No. 1 Simona Halep, pointed out the same when he posted a tweet talking about the disproportionate amount of the WTA Dubai Premier event prize money where he pointed out that the semi-finalist earned a four-time jump over the quarter-finalists.
His tweet led to several other players also providing their inputs, including Halep herself, Nicole Gibbs, Bruno Soares, Vasek Pospisil and Sam Groth. Here is a look at Cahill's tweet and the reaction from the players.
I’m all for delivering more prizemoney to players at Grand Slams but the @atptour & @WTA need to fix their own % breakdowns to help lower ranked. There is too much money at the top. Prizemoney basically doubles every round at all events. In Dubai, a 4X jump between QF & SF. pic.twitter.com/WlhJ4XgD9h

Let’s also take a moment to acknowledge that in this case “lower ranked” applies to the 31st ranked player in the world (the cut for that event). Rest of us making pennies.

This is insane. Been fighting for that for 6 years now w @atptour

I saw that jump Darren....and just didn’t understand. I thought it a misprint. And how about the prize money in challengers. No wonder some are targeted by the gaming industry. This is the breakdown from a 48 draw challenger in Canada last week pic.twitter.com/YzvY2ajC38

Completely agree, Darren!Tournaments want to showcase the PM pay for the winner. Naturally, it becomes disproportionate along the way. Players side has been pushing to fix this...

.Arent the @atptour rises considering more proportionate? Take Dubai this week pic.twitter.com/QAFQB805bX
