Sania Mirza: 'My goal is to get back into the top-100 by Roland Garros'
Skipping all the action since October 2017, a former doubles world no. 1 Sania Mirza is up and running again in 2020, giving birth to a son and leaving injuries behind for a fresh start. The Indian worked hard during the preseason and made a perfect return, pairing with Nadiia Kichenok to win the title in Hobart in the first event of the year. A calf muscle injury forced Sania to retire from the first round clash at the Australian Open against Xinyun Han and Lin Zhu, taking some time off the court and returning in Dubai together with Caroline Garcia. The Indo-French pair lost to the 5th seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Saisai Zheng 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and two minutes, winning only 11 points on the return and dropping almost half of the points behind the initial shot to suffer four breaks from six chances offered to Krejcikova and Zheng. Mirza will now travel to Doha before heading to Indian Wells and Miami, hoping to improve her ranking as soon as possible and return into the top-100 as soon as possible.
"After Doha, I will play Indian Wells and Miami Open. Of course, a lot depends on where I can use my special ranking and where I can get wild cards," Mirza said. "The main idea would be to get a better ranking and crack the top-100 again by Roland Garros. It would be great if I can achieve that; that would save my special ranking only for the big events. Right now, I have to wait and see. Dubai has always been very good to me; it is my second home. We have always been here whenever we can. We are spending half of the year here and it's always nice to play at this event. It's nicer to come to a tournament and play from home, rather than from a hotel room."
