Simona Halep reflects upon her phenomenal consistency
After the semifinal at the Australian Open, Simona Halep returned to Dubai, a tournament in which he was credited as first seed. Here, after struggling to defeat Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka, in the semifinals she easily beat Jennifer Brady by giving her only two games. In the final, the first after Wimbledon 2019, she defeated the revelation of the year Elena Rybakina in a battle that lasted over two hours.
Halep was the WTA Most Popular Player of the Year for two consecutive years in 2014 and 2015, as well as the WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year for three consecutive years in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She is also the first Romanian woman to be ranked No. 1 and the first Romanian player to win a Wimbledon singles title.
“I always had in my mind that I had to be consistent. I don’t like the way you win a tournament and then you don’t do anything for a few months. I like to build my power to build my consistency every week. Since I met Daren (Cahill) I thought we had to look into the big picture, not just that week. So I did that pretty well. That’s the way I could stay such a long time on the top.
I think this (consistency) makes me more proud than winning titles because if you are able to be there, you have everything like power, strong mental and physical also very form. I think it’s a good position and I’m enjoying it. It’s very special to be in 2020, 20th anniversary of this tournament, 20th title. It’s pretty special. I just want to enjoy it. It’s very, very beautiful" - Halep said after her 20th WTA title.
