Steffi Graf: I am Not Worried About Future of German Women's Tennis
German tennis legend Steffi Graf says she is not worried about the future of German women's tennis in an interview to Rheinische Post.
Graf, a 22 time Grand Slam singles champion, commented, "I have a lot of confidence in the work of German youth tennis. You can see that a lot is being done for young women, and I'm sure that some talents will develop from this."
Barbara Rittner, the Head of German Women's Tennis, has said that when the current leading German women, Angelique Kerber, Julia Gorges and Andrea Petkovic, step down, there would be a gap in German women's tennis. All the three players are above 30 years old and Petkovic has already said that she would be retiring soon already. Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 while Gorges has also been ranked in the Top 10 in the past.
Graf says that the developments are not constant in any sport and that there would always be some ups and downs in any sport at different times. However, she has confidence that the investments being made on young German women will pay off in time.
One of the young German women, Alexandra Vecic recently reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open junior event, which was a positive sign for German youth.
Graf is considered to be one of the all-time greats in women's tennis, winning 22 Grand Slam titles, including the Golden Slam in 1988. She retired in 1999 at the age of 30 and has since been busy with her family life and her foundation.
