Kei Nishikori getting better but still not ready to play
Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori appears to be set to miss this week's Davis Cup action as he at won't play at least on the opening day of a qualifying round tie against Ecuador.
Nishikori, a former world No. 4, has yet to kick off his 2020 campaign as he is still recovering from an elbow surgery he underwent in October 2019.
Three days ago, world No. 31 Nishikori pulled out of the Indian Wells Masters -- which starts next week -- and that put a big doubt over his Davis Cup participation.
Nishikori was present during the draw ceremony but his name wasn't drawn as he confirmed that he wants to give himself a bit more time before he makes a return.
"Condition-wise, I'm not at my best. I'll get back to playing after I build up my body a bit more and get confidence. My injury is getting better. I have no pain now. I can't say for certain when I will come back, maybe Miami or clay season," Nishikori said, via Sports Hochi and Daily Sports.
