Novak Djokovic's weeks at world No. 1 won't be counted during Tour suspension

The ATP has confirmed to L'Equipe by mail that the weeks spent at the world No. 1 won't be counted during the Tour suspension. 

On March, the ATP initially suspended the Tour for six weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak. 

Less than a month later, the ATP extended the Tour suspension until at least July 13. 

Many wondered what would happen with the rankings during the Tour suspension. 

The ATP made a logical choice and decided to freeze the ranking until the Tour resumes. 

But one more question was left to be answered as many were curios to know would Novak Djokovic's weeks spent at the world No. 1 during the Tour suspension be counted. 

Now, the official confirmation has confirmed what many expected -- Djokovic won't benefit from his weeks on the place until the Tour resumes. 

Djokovic is the third player on the all-time list of most weeks spent at the world No. 1.

Roger Federer, 38, holds the record for the most weeks at the world No. 1 with 310. 

Pete Sampras, a former 14-time Grand Slam champion, spent 286 weeks at the world No. 1 during his career. 

Djokovic is on the verge of overtaking Sampras on the second place as he has spent 282 weeks at the world No. 1. 

Had the weeks at the world No. 1 counted during the Tour suspension, Djokovic would have passed Sampras next month. 

Djokovic started the season as the world No. 2 but returned to the top spot after winning a record eighth Australian Open title.

The Serb fell just short of spending the whole 2019 season as the world No. 1 as he lost the top place to Rafael Nadal after the Paris Masters In November.
