Roger Federer: "ATP and WTA must merge into a single association"

Roger Federer talked about a topic that is having a lot of discussions in this period without tennis. The global Covid-19 pandemic forced ATP and WTA players to stay at home, like everyone else across the world. And in these moments the protagonists of the ATP and WTA Tours talk about their feelings, their worries and their ideas about what could be the future of tennis.

Roger Federer talked about what he thinks about ATP and WTA Tours, and what their future should be: "Just wondering…..am I the only one thinking that now is the time for men’s and women’s tennis to be united and come together as one?". With this tweet, in which he proposes the merger between ATP and WTA, the Swiss Maestro opened the debate on what the game must do to restart better after the stop caused by the coronavirus. "I am not talking about merging competition on the court, but merging the 2 governing bodies (ATP and WTA) that oversee the men’s and women’s professional tour".

The proposal also goes towards the pressing requests of women's tennis for an equalization of compensation. Considering everything that is happening in 2020, with most of the tournaments canceled or postponed, Roger Federer's proposal could find many supporters, both in the WTA Tour and in the men's Tour: it would be an epochal for tennis, a change equal to introduction of the Open Era. Could this be the future of tennis?

In the meantime, the season should resume between August and September, although the final decision will come by June. Meanwhile Roger Federer is recovering from surgery on his right knee.
