Wimbledon Foundation Takes Several Initiatives to help Charities and Frontline Staff
The Wimbledon Foundation, the charitable arm of The All England Lawn Tennis Club and The Championships, has taken several initiatives in recent weeks to help charities and frontline staff in the area during the current lockdown period and pandemic,.
The Wimbledon Foundation has said that it has made three new donations in the following areas -
Support for Merton and Wandsworth based organisations, delivering supplies to those in need. Support for the NHS through a donation to St George’s Hospital Charity’s Coronavirus Appeal, offering frontline staff, accommodation, mental health and welfare support and much-needed supplies. Support to charitable organisations in Merton through a contribution to the Merton Giving Coronavirus Fund.The foundation has already made donations earlier to Age UK Merton, Age UK Wandsworth, Glass Door Homeless Charity, the Merton Winter Night Shelter and both Wandsworth and Wimbledon Foodbank and plans to do more in the coming weeks.
Bruce Weatherill, Chairman of the Wimbledon Foundation, commented, "During this unprecedented time, we want to do all we can to support organisations working tirelessly to support individuals and communities affected by the coronavirus crisis. These donations are a starting point and we are actively planning what more we can do to support those most in need.”
The 2020 WImbledon Championships have been cancelled due to the global pandemic - the first time since the World War II that the event is not being held. The club has said that is has an insurance policy in place that will cover the cancellation due to a pandemic.
All tennis tournaments till July 12th have also been suspended on the professional circuits.
