Andy Murray: 'I haven’t actually hit a tennis ball for the past six weeks'
Much of the world is still in a locked state to try to contain the spread of the virus, which has also generated significant effects on the world of sport in general. Both circuits are suspended until mid-July after the cancellation of Wimbledon, but a further extension of ATP and WTA is likely at least until early August.
Former World number 1 Andy Murray had been working on his fitness following a hip injury, in a bid to return for the Miami Open, which was originally scheduled for March. Organisers made the decision to cancel the tournament amidst the coronavirus pandemic, before the entire ATP tennis season was suspended indefinitely.
The three-time Grand Slam champion is determined to be in “really good shape” once the tennis season resumes. “I haven’t played a match for six months and I haven’t actually hit a tennis ball for the past six weeks. I’ve been at home. But I have no idea, really, and I don’t think many of the players do know how it will affect them,” Murray told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.
“I’ve tried to use this time to get myself in the best shape possible to try and get my hip stronger… I’m trying to give that more of a chance to heal, but also to get stronger as well. I’m physically in really good shape… I’m just trying to get myself in really good shape so when we do get the opportunity to play again, my body is ready" - he added.
