Andy Murray: Some men would rather to be paid less than equally as female players

Great Britain's Andy Murray would like to see women being involved in decision-making positions as much as men if the ATP and WTA pull off a merger. 

Recently, record 20-time Roger Federer called for the ATP and WTA to use this time to work on a merger. 

"When it comes to key decision-makers in tennis, pretty much all of them are men and I think when these discussions happen, it's important not just to see this merger through a man's eyes but also to bring more women into the decision-making positions," Murray told CNN. 

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, says there are players who would rather earn less than be paid equally as female players. 

"When there has been prize money increases in the sport, where let's say the first round loser's cheque has gone for the men from $8,000 to $10,000 and the women's went from $6,000 to $10,000 I spoke to some of the male players who were unhappy because the prize money was equal. I said 'would you rather there was no increase at all?' They said to me 'yeah actually.'

"That's some of the mentalities you're working with in these discussions, where someone would actually rather make less money just so they're not on an equal footing with some of the female players, so there will be some challenges."
