Carlos Moya reveals Rafael Nadal's pre-match routine
This quarantine period is hard for everyone, without distinction. It is also true for someone like Rafael Nadal, winner of 12 Roland Garros titles and number one in the world for several weeks. The Spaniard, who has made mental strength one of his strengths, is now in difficulty precisely from this point of view. Although he continues to train naturally, the 19-time Grand Slam champion has also known that lack of motivation that a long stop period like this entails.
In a recent interview, Carlos Moya was asked about what Rafa does on the day of his match. Moya replied by saying, “On the same day of a match, we have breakfast and then he likes to warm up long before the match. If a match is at 5 pm, he warms up 4 hours before. That means half an hour of intense tennis.
I used to this 1 hour before a match but he prefers it this way. He likes to have some time to eat, to analyze and play a game of parchis. You may have seen us play that table game which helps us relax. He has very established routines. His way is this way.”
Nadal stands alone in the Open Era as the player with the most clay court titles (59), and holds an all-time record of 12 French Opens, 11 Monte-Carlo Masters and 11 Barcelona titles. He also stands alone with the longest single surface win streak in matches (clay courts, 81) and in sets (clay courts, 50) in the history of the Open Era.
Due to these achievements, many have called Nadal "The King of Clay", and he is widely regarded as the greatest clay-court player in history. His evolution into an all-court champion has established him as one of the best players of all time.
