David Ferrer hopes Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will benefit from extended break
Former Spanish world No. 3 David Ferrer hopes fellow compatriot Rafael Nadal and Swiss Roger Federer will benefit from the Tour suspension and that it will extend their careers.
Nadal, 33, and 38-year-old Federer are still dominant forces in tennis as they are still naming deep runs at the Grand Slam events and contending for the biggest titles.
"This break can be good for Rafa and Roger, with this break we hope we can enjoy them for a few more years," Ferrer told Marca.
Earlier this week, Nadal said he was pessimistic about seeing any tennis for the rest of 2020 and admitted that he fears next year's Australian Open could also be in jeopardy.
"It hurts me a lot that an athlete cannot give his opinion. I don't like criticism with demagoguery. I don't like the insult, you can agree with an athlete or not, but not deny him when he expresses himself," Ferrer defended Nadal from the criticism he has received. "I know Rafa Nadal and his family and it hurts. He is a very coherent person. What happens? That his opinion is worth less than those of the others?"
Ferrer also spoke briefly about Nick Kyrgios as he says the Australian tennis star reminds him a bit of himself from his younger days.
"When I was young, I was a bit of a Kyrgios too, breaking rackets and stuff. I understand those aspects and they can be improved. Hopefully Kyrgios can be a consistent worker in the future," Ferrer added.
