Marco Trungelliti blasts Dominic Thiem for lower-ranked players comments
Argentine world No. 230 Marco Trungelliti wasn't a fan at all of Dominic Thiem's comments on the lower-ranked players as he thinks it was bad to hear something like that from a fellow player.
Novak Djokovic, the President of ATP Player Council, proposed that top-100 players each donate from $5,000-30,000 on a sliding scale to support the player relief fund.
Thiem, ranked at No. 3 in the world, said he was opposed to handing out $30,000 because he thinks the lower-ranked just aren't fighting enough.
The Austrian's comments didn't sit well with the lower-ranked players -/ even with some higher-ranked players -- and the back-to-back French runner-up received lots of criticism from mostly the lower-ranked players.
"In the end, everyone does what they want with the money, but to say that tennis doesn't deserve it when there are guys who work like animals to get to where he was or where he is, it's quite ugly for a tennis player to say that kind of things," Trungelitti told Estadio Deportivo.
The season has been suspended since March 12 due to the coronavirus outbreak and there won't be any events taking place until at least mid-July.
"Yes. I am already mentally prepared to play again next year. 90% of tennis players and coaches find it impossible to play this year. We live in hotels every time we travel and everything has to be very controlled. All the time up on a plane, but our exposure is extreme. We will see by January of next year. It will be Australia if everything is normal," Trungelitti said.
