Marco Trungelliti on why pandemic lockdown is extremely tough for tennis athletes

Argentina's Marco Trungelliti, 30, insists the coronavirus pandemic lockdown is extremely tough for tennis players as they stop earning money when they are not playing. 

The tennis season has been suspended for two months and there won't be any tennis events taking place until at least mid-July, while some fear the whole season could eventually get cancelled. 

Trungelitti, ranked at No. 231 in the world, has earned $1,010,162 over the course of his career. 

"Professional tennis players do not have a fixed salary. The moment we stop playing we stop earning," Trungelliti told EFE, as revealed on Tennis.com. "We spend a lot on travel and while we don't have to spend that, we don't have the potential to earn anything at tournaments."

Several days ago, the seven stakeholders of tennis announced a $6 million relief fund support package for the lower-ranked players. 

"There is a lot of anger among players and coaches. More than anything, people are angry at the lack of support. The lack of communication is concerning," Trungelliti said. 

Trungelliti, a former world No. 112, claims it's not only the players who are facing difficulties during the Tour suspension.

"The bad thing is there are many people who make a living from this sport and not just players that have stopped earning. Those behind them also stop. The tennis organizations are quite troubling and their handling of it is poor. The whole system is quite loose and they don't take into account the coaches, the trainers," Trungelliti added.
