Rafael Nadal: 'Everyday 800-900 people were dying in Spain'

Spain is one of the countries with the highest death toll due to Coronavirus. Former World number 1 Rafael Nadal has not hidden his disappointment with the way the government has handled this global crisis. He also received several criticisms for expressing his opinion on such a sensitive subject.

In a recent interview with La Voz De Galicia, Rafael Nadal opened up on whether the temporary layoff could end his career. He replied to this by saying, “No. And I don’t even think about it. Every day 800 or 900 people were dying in Spain. There comes a time when Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open are not in my head. When the sport can, it will return. There are other priorities.”

However, the 19-time grand slam champion is doubtful of returning to the court anytime this year."I hope we're able to return this year, but I don't think we will," he told Spanish newspaper El Pais on Tuesday. "Unfortunately, I would sign up to be ready for 2021 -- hopefully. "I'm more concerned about the Australian Open (in January) than about what happens later this year. I see 2020 as practically lost. I have hope to be able to start next year, that's what I wish."

The break has resulted in the cancellation of Wimbledon while the French Open has been rescheduled to September 20th, just a week after the conclusion of the US Open, which is due to start on August 31st.
